The small volcanic island of Lanzarote boasts some of the most surreal scenery on the planet. Created by eruptions during the 1730´s and 1820´s which totally reshaped much of the islands interior. Turning lush farmland into a barren wasteland.
Today the twisted terrain of the Timanfaya Volcano Park is the islands number one tourist attraction. And little wonder as the scenery here really is breathtaking – creating the impression that one has landed on a different planet to earth altogether. Many film directors agree – as the region has been used as the backdrop for a number of big budget science fiction classics and will shortly be enjoying a starring role in the new release Clash Of The Titans 3. Which stars Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson and which is expected in cinemas in early April.
Away from the volcanic region though Lanzarote offers all of the more usual attractions associated with a holiday island, such as wonderful beaches and a wide choice of restaurants.
Tourism first started out here in what was then a small coastal village called La Tiñosa in the late 1960´s. At the time Lanzarote was regarded as a novel and slightly mysterious new holiday destination – located just off the coast of Morocco. With little development and few roads. All that has changed today though as La Tiñosa is now Puerto del Carmen – the largest resort on the island. Whilst the infrastucture has also been developed too in order to cope with the 1.4 million tourists who arrive on flights to Lanzarote every year.
There are also lots of different places for these visitors to stay on the island. With a large selection of Lanzarote villas and apartments available to visitors. Along with over 200 hotels – the bulk of which are located in the resort of Playa Blanca at the southern end of the island. Which makes an ideal base for anyone planning to visit the volcanic region as it is just a fifteen minute drive away.
Lanzarote is also home to some of the best beaches in the Canaries – boasting close to 100 superb stretches of sand. Such as the bright white grains of Caleton Blanco close to the ferry port of Orzola. And the charming little seaside village of Arrieta and its beach Playa la Garita. Exploring the island is best done on four wheels and car hire in Lanzarote is readily available in all of the main holiday resorts.
