Generally kings built forts or palaces on ground. But do you want to view the fort in the sky or at very high level on a mountain , then come and visit Sigiriya , a lion’s rock ancient fortress in Sri Lanka.

It is one among the hanging monasteries in the world.This is one of the tourist destinations and major attractions of the country. It was built by the King Kasyapa during the period 477-495 A.D. This for was built some 1500 years ago at the top of a mountain summit. It is recognized as a world heritage site.
History says that the site was occupied by Buddhist monastics around thousands of years ago and built caves , rock inscriptions and shelters with rock. After 14th century this fort was abandoned and has no records. Later this fort came into focus by a British explorer John Still in 1907.
It is just not only a fortress but also a palace of pleasure. It resembles a sleeping lion. One can find the paws of lion built of rock and enter the fort
through the mouth of lion. Hence, termed as lion’s rock. The creativity of the builders is awesome. The fort is surrounded by beautiful green garden. It comprises of water gardens, reservoirs of water like swimming pools, fountains, pathways etc.
A mirror wall here is another feature where the king could see himself in the mirror but it is ruined now.
An important aspect of this fort is frescoes - fantabulous paintings on rock
surface adds beauty to the site. The landscape, environment and the creativity used in architecture here is extraordinary.
