Taj Mahal – Symbol of Love

Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the modern world is located in Agra,Delhi,India.It stands as mark of pride of Mughal architecture. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ,grand son of Akbar the great.

TAJ MAHAL

Mumtaz Mahal , third wife of  Shah Jahan urged him to build a burial chamber after her death in such a way that that the people had not seen before. The construction of Taj Mahal bagan in the year 1632 one year after his lovely wife’s demise. Ustad Ahmad Lahouri considered as chief architect of Taj Mahal, was a Persian.It took 22 years to complete this wonderful monument.

It is exclusively built of white marble stone .The dawn and sunset adds beauty to the beauty of Taj.The reflection of mahal in the river Yamuna which is behind it on a full moon day at night time  is awesome.

The tomb endures on a raised plinth of square shape with a iwan, doorway of an arch shape  which surmounts a large dome.The base is a huge multi-chambered cube like structure with an edge of about 55 metres. The dome reflects the shape of an onion it is often called as onion dome or amrud dome or guava dome.The top of dome is decorated with a design of lotus and is spire Taj Mahal   Symbol of Lovetopped by gilded spire with a moon over it, an Islamic Theme,whose horns point towards heaven.. Other four smaller domed chattris or kiosks one are placed at its corners similar to the main dome provide light inside. Tall decorative spires or guldastas poke out from edges of base walls .

Additional pishtaqs or vauted archway are stacked above and below on either side of the main arch. The impressing characteristic of this monument is symmetry on all sides. Four towers or minarets each of more than 40 metres in height are present at each corner of the platform. The towers were built more or less outside of the plinth so that when collapse occurs the material from them would fall away from the tomb.

The main chamber contains the false caskets of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal but their real graves are at lower level.

The interior and exterior decoration includes calligraphy and design of flowers using precious gems is fantastic . The main arches, chiseled with passages from the Holy book of Islamic Religion Quran and the flower patterns add charm to the beauty of Taj.

The beauty of Taj Mahal attracts millions of vistors from all over the world every year. Taj Ganji or Mumtazabad, a small town was constructed with caravanserais and markets to serve the needs of workmen and visitors.One can visit this from 6 am to 7 pm weekdays, except on Friday when prayers are held at mosque between 12 P.M to 2 P.M. The night view which gives more pleasure to the visitors is on full moon day and two days before and after omitting Ramzan month and Fridays.
