Machu Picchu , a prominent icon of Inca Empire situated on ridge of Andes mountains above Urubamba Valley where Urubamba river flows is about 8000 ft (2430 metres) above sea level in Peru, South America.

Machu Picchu of Inca City

It is often called as “The Lost City of Incas “.An American historian, archaeologist of Yale University Hiram Bingham in the year 1911 brought this city into light and from then it has become one of the attractive places for the tourists.

Please see – 6 Things To Do In Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu means “Old Peak” was built between 1460 and 1470 AD by an Inca ruler, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. There are many stories by scholars behind its construction. Some say that this served as an Estate for the Inca Empire, for some it was a prison built for the people who have committed crimes in the kingdom and the other theory is that to control the economy of the conquered regions this was built. Whatever may be the reason the architecture skills used in the construction were elegant.

It was a sacred place for the Inca people and was built in architectural style of Incas. The construction of Inca walls show protection from Earth quakes. Shamanic legends state that when a person touches the Intihuatana stone with forehead, vision to spirit world is opened. Intihuatana means tying the Sun or hitching post of the Sun. When the sun disappears during winters it was believed that sun is tied to this stone from disappearing. Even mummies are found here.

This site was declared as “Historical Sanctuary” of Peru in 1971 which covers an area about 325.92 square kilometers with ample fauna and flora.

The landscape here with mountains, rivers, valleys, fields, temples, buildings and greenery all around is awesome. Now it has a credit of one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

It is a bit difficult for any person to return from this place after going there. Visiting an ancient enigmatic and wonderful site like Machu Picchu is of great pleasure.
